Who are we?
Oxford University Volleyball Club (OUVC) was first established in 1970. It currently caters for almost 60 members at both competitive and recreational levels, structured around six teams - 3 men's and 3 women's: the Blues teams and 2nd student teams who compete at national student level in the Western Conference of the BUCS League, and NVL teams which play in the National Volleyball League open to all adults. Each year the Club looks for new players for all teams and the indoor league. Compared to other clubs we have many graduate students and the whole Club is extremely international with over a dozen countries represented.
OUVC is not only about training and matches. We are also a very social club. Our social secretaries organise fun events and we end each season with a formal dinner. Also the tournaments we organise and the alumni matches are very social and fun! If you are interested in participating in any of our activities, you are very welcome to get in touch with our committee members. We look forward to meeting you!
OUVC is proud to be Volley-1 (& Sport England Clubmark) accredited, which, according to the Volleyball England website, is 'a mark of a quality club that is equitable, inclusive, friendly, well-run and most importantly safe'. To achieve Volley-1 accreditation we have compiled a folder with all our management, playing programme, safety, equity etc documents, most of which you can find in the handbook. The amount of qualified coaches and officials is also a major part of the accreditation process, as well as a child protection policy and people with CRB checks for outreach. The accreditation is valid for 4 years, from January 2008 until December 2011. The Club expects to reapply for this status when it expires, which means we will develop further, get more qualified coaches and referees and keep the management of the club up to date. Any members interested in coaching, refereeing, Outreach, being on the committee or helping to organise e.g. tournaments and more funding, please do get in touch with our president.
How can you get involved?
If you're interested in joining one of the Blues teams, you should expect to train two to three times per week. The Blues team matches are on Wednesday afternoon/evenings. The teams also compete to qualify for two national championships held during a weekend in February and March with a one-day qualification tournament played in November. In addition, the traditional Varsity match (Oxford vs Cambridge) is played on a Saturday in February. NVL matches are scheduled on weekends; men play about one match per week, women play triangulars, so two matches on Sunday, usually once a month. Training times and match schedules can be found on this website.
If you're in Oxford over the Summer and would like to play, indoor or outdoor, then please come along to one of our training sessions, or contact our President for info about temporary membership.
The Oxford College Indoor Volleyball League was established in 2007 and now runs in Michaelmas and Hilary Terms. Players from all levels are welcome to join the League and all colleges, departments and groups of Oxford Brookes University can enter teams into the League. This is in addition to the outdoor annual inter-college competition (Cuppers) and outdoor competitions aimed at community members and experienced volleyball players (4Max). Our popular annual Alumni match event has been organised since 2005. The Club is also involved in the University Outreach Programme, an initiative where our members are teaching the basics of volleyball to school children and working to improve existing sports provisions in the local communities. The Club received the Outreach Club of the Year Award for its involvement in the Programme in 2007 & again in 2008.
